There’s a lot of things you can do keep your computer running smoothly between checkups. All it takes is a bit of awareness to make sure your data stays safe, maximize your computer speed, and to minimize the risk of getting viruses. Follow these steps to keep your computer healthy and happy.

Use Protection

Get a good antivirus and keep it up to date. You can find a great one in the Downloads section of website from Microsoft Security Essentials.  Though MSE promotes an active security protection filter, it’s a good idea to run a full scan weekly to make sure your system is up to date.

Keep It Clean

Run the disk cleanup utility found in the All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and Disk Cleanup Folder. That makes sure to keep all of your temporary internet files (where most viruses live) from slowing down your computer. Disk cleanup should be run  about once a week

Stay Up To Date

Windows updates should be run at least once a month to get the latest security patches and drivers for your system.  Automatic updates are the easiest way to stay up to date but not necessarily the most secure. Every now and again Microsoft will release an update that will flub up your computer. It’s best to wait about a week to install new updates after they come out.

Blow It Out

Every computer gets dust inside of it. The more dust your computer has inside of it, the harder it has to work to stay cool, and the slower your computer will run. You can either buy a can of compressed air, or simply blow really hard to keep the dust out.

Get A Check Up

Like a car or a dentist, it’s best to get a check up every 6 months from MyNewITGuys to make sure your computer is running as well as it could be. Preventative maintenance is the best way to keep your computer healthy and happy.
