Michael E Gerber wrote a book not too long ago call “The E-Myth Revisited: Why Most Small Businesses Don’t Work and What to Do About It” regarding e business

A thoroughly depressing book about how to get in and out of the e business world fast by developing a franchise that can be sold.

Gone are the days of starting an e business doing what you love and pursuing it for the rest of your life. It seems that this kind of mentality of working really hard for a short period of time then relaxing for the rest of your life is a common theme that grows more prevalent daily. Personally, I’m not a fan of the get rich quick, work as little as possible mentality and I feel it’s one of the biggest weaknesses in American culture.

Starting an e business is hard, but it doesn’t have to be.

These days there are a few non-negotiable items in place. A well-run e business must have a good technological infrastructure, a good website, great SEO, plus a product/service that someone will actually want.

That’s pretty much it. All of the other parts about accounting, management, execution of tasks can all be shuffled around and use different methods to encourage a successful e business. Dealer’s choice.

But the non-negotiable points of a technological infrastructure to build an e business up can be too daunting to even start an e business and may prevent the idea all together.  Sure there’s plenty of people out there that are more that willing to “help” you as long as you’re willing to pay them money, but what I’ve found from years of small e business support is that these companies are mostly good at invoicing their clients, and that’s about it.

How do you find the best companies to help with your technological infrastructure in e business?

Look for ones that are willing to align your best interests with theirs. In other words, you want to make sure that the company you hire’s monetary benefit is directly dependent on your success. Companies who take a small percentage of your net income will on average work 78% harder to help you than companies you hire that you merely give money to.

Other ways to help support your own technological infrastructure

Learn it yourself. No company will have a more vested interest in your company than you. If you learn the steps necessary to make an impact on your bottom line, your e business is much more likely to succeed than if you just paid someone to do it. Even if you find that the work is either too involved, too complex, or something you would rather pay someone to do for you, a good knowledge of how the process works will at least give you a leg up when trying to find the right people for the job.

Trash those books.

These days, any book that has been written about e-business, SEO, or any other how-to’s on matters involving start-ups should be trashed. The field is changing so fast that by the time any book has been published, the information is already out of date.

The newest techniques of gaining market share will live and breathe in blogs online and other online articles. It’s the newest techniques that are going to make the difference between a business that wants to do well, simply exist, or fail.
